White outlines on leather

I know I'm gonna end up biting my toungue for this one. But anyone have any ideas what the white lines (primarily around the lapels) painted on leather jackets symbolize? I don't plan on putting em on my current one but definitely on the next one.

This seems really similar to the "shoe laces" thread a while back. My guess is that its the same thing, but still it doesn't really have a purpose other than your general liking for the color you are wearing.
