Mohawks Rock

At ceremonies commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944, an American army camp was recreated in the French village of Sainte Marie du Mont, where even local Frenchmen became reenacters. This Frenchman paid tribute to brave American paratroopers who helped to liberate his country from the Nazis by donning an American Army uniform and shaving a Mohawk into his hair like some World War Two paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division -- sacrificing his hair to show his appreciation for what the Americans did. An incredibly touching tribute. When I was an American paratrooper visiting France just 10 years after the war, I was told that if I wore my paratrooper uniform to the Normandy region, grateful villagers wouldn't allow me to pay for a meal or a drink or a hotel room -- especially if I wore a Mohawk like some of my paratrooper predecessors -- even though I wasn't there in World War Two. Frenchmen said they will never forget the Americans who died to liberate them. The main 101st Airborne unit that wore the Mohawks in the D-Day combat jump was the so-called "Filthy 13" pathfinder demolition team. Only four of those 13 men survived the war.. .
