Leanne, 18, who also says you can call her "LeNn" hails from Plymouth Massachusetts and will be attending a school for cosmetology in the fall. Judging by her personal style, spiked hair and lively colors, she'll be a great addition for that school and already is for Mohawks Rock!

Mohawks Rock launched on November 15, 2007 and immediately starting gaining traction and attention. At the time, instructions on how to make a mohawk or make liberty spikes, were sporadically thrown together on random sites and pages, while certainly not covering the gamut of variety in extreme hairstyling. Mohawks Rock sought to fill that void. Instead of developing a monolithic sage-on-stage presentation, a vibrant community was born attracting citizens with colorful characters, great hair advice and everyone's recommendations their favorite hair products.

The mohawk city has many tourists that do not always decide to engage and join, but like The Rambla in Barcelona they are always entertained and informed by the citizenry. With over 250,000 visitors from 174 countries it is no wonder the population is so diverse and continues its rapid growth, doubling in the last 6 months.

Compound that diverse population explosion with the massive amount of information distributed in the forums, chat rooms, blogs, music selections, videos, event calendars and 10,000+ mohawk photos and now mohawkers now finally have a place to call "home".

While the city grows, so does it neighborhoods. Members spawn off their own groups spanning across the board, developing areas for the Educated Punks, the Ska Lovers, obviously a requisite Mr. T Fan Club and even a club for those who love the Camdentown, London store Cyberdog, which looks like a future sculpted from 1980s pop-culture.

The most popular neighborhood belongs to the Girl 'hawks group with over 220 members. Some may find that surprising but Mohawks Rock visitors are over 55% female. You will find plenty of women with a variety of extreme hairstyles and mohawks. This popularity only builds when albums like girls with mohawks get compiled together to show all the different styles of mohawks, spikes and shavings the ladies create.

November 15th marks International Mohawk Day, so check back after halloween and you will see free mohawk haircut events offered around the globe. That may not be your style but do not be surprised when you see a few more mohawks walking around on the "Ides of Mo-vember". At the very least you may see some people wearing their mohawks rock t-shirts showing that they have visited or are one of the thousands of the Mohawks Rock Nation at www.MohawksRock.com.

Originally published in The Wall Street Journal, July 25th, 1991

by John Taylor Gatto

I’ve taught public school for 26 years but I just can’t do it anymore. For years I asked the local school board and superintendent to let me teach a curriculum that doesn’t hurt kids, but they had other fish to fry. So I’m going to quit, I think.

I’ve come slowly to understand what it is I really teach: A curriculum of confusion, class position, arbitrary justice, vulgarity, rudeness, disrespect for privacy, indifference to quality, and utter dependency. I teach how to fit into a world I don’t want to live in.

I just can’t do it anymore. I can’t train children to wait to be told what to do; I can’t train people to drop what they are doing when a bell sounds; I can’t persuade children to feel some justice in their class placement when there isn’t any, and I can,t persuade children to believe teachers have valuable secrets they can acquire by becoming our disciples. That isn’t true.

Government schooling is the most radical adventure in history. It kills the family by monopolizing the best times of childhood and by teaching disrespect for home and parents.

An exaggeration? Hardly. Parents aren’t meant to participate in our form of schooling, rhetoric to the contrary. My orders as schoolteacher are to make children fit an animal training system, not to help each find his or her personal path.

The whole blueprint of school procedure is Egyptian, not Greek or Roman. It grows from the faith that human value is a scarce thing, represented symbolically by the narrow peak of a pyramid.

That idea passed into American history through the Puritans. It found its “scientific” presentation in the bell curve, along which talent supposedly apportions itself by some Iron Law of biology.

It,s a religious idea and school is its church. New York City hires me to be a priest. I offer rituals to keep heresy at bay. I provide documentation to justify the heavenly pyramid.

Socrates foresaw that if teaching became a formal profession something like this would happen. Professional interest is best served by making what is easy to do seem hard; by subordinating laity to priesthood. School has become too vital a jobs project, contract-giver and protector of the social order to allow itself to be “re-formed.” It has political allies to guard its marches.

That’s why reforms come and go-without changing much. Even reformers can’t imagine school much different.

David learns to read at age four; Rachel, at age nine: In normal development, when both are 13, you can,t tell which one learned first — the five-year spread means nothing at all. But in school I will label Rachel “learning disabled” and slow David down a bit, too.

For a paycheck, I adjust David to depend on me to tell him when to go and stop. He won,t outgrow that dependency. I identify Rachel as discount merchandise, “special education.” After a few months she’ll be locked into her place forever.

In 26 years of teaching rich kids and poor, I almost never met a “learning disabled” child; hardly every met a “gifted and talented” one, either. Like all school categories, these are sacred myths, created by the human imagination. They derive from questionable values we never examine because they preserve the temple of schooling.

That’s the secret behind short-answer tests, bells, uniform time blocks, age grading, standardization, and all the rest of the school religion punishing our nation.

There isn’t a right way to become educated; there are as many ways as fingerprints. We don’t need state-certified teachers to make education happen–that probably guarantees it won’t.

How much more evidence is necessary? Good schools don’t need more money or a longer year; they need real free-market choices, variety that speaks to every need and runs risks. We don’t need a national curriculum, or national testing either. Both initiatives arise from ignorance of how people learn, or deliberate indifference to it.

I can’t teach this way any longer. If you hear of a job where I don’t have to hurt kids to make a living, let me know. Come fall I’ll be looking for work, I think.

In late Feb 09' there will be new chatroom features, the good news is all the great features you have on chat today, such as private chats will still be featured in the next version:

Chat will be persistent on every page of your social network.
With this new release, chat will become a bar across the bottom of every page of your social network (see screenshots after the jump). It will start in “bar mode” and will expand into “window mode”. It will have a simple, consistent look across the social networks.

You will be able to pop chat out of your network and keep it open as its own window.
This is something many of you asked for and we’re happy to provide it in this next version.
Sound notifications when messages are received. Notifications start OFF by default, but can be turned on through the options menu.

Members will appear online more accurately.
Because chat is now persistent across all pages on Mohawks Rock, members will be displayed as online more accurately. However, there will still be the option for a member to make themselves invisible, if they choose.
Reconnections will be more graceful. When a connection to the server is lost for some reason, chat will attempt to reconnect gracefully without requiring a page refresh, and if possible without affecting the member. There will be no more need to reload the page entirely and lose all your messages.

Chat will now load the entire scrollable list of people online.
No more clicking on ‘More’!. As a result, search will now be faster too.
Better support for firewalls. This new version uses only port 80, the standard HTTP port.

There will be local message history.
Your chat client will now remember the last ten messages sent and allows to look at them by pressing Ctrl+UP and Ctrl+DOWN (arrow keys).

Chat will now be in Flash.
Just read this the other day at http://www.successful-blog.com/1/7584/.
The article drifted some but this particular quote struck at home.

The next time you sit down for “just five minutes” in social media, make a point to lift up another person. You don’t need to attempt profound conversations on deep subjects at every turn. Just try to stay open to the signals we all give when discouragement, loneliness, and fatigue set in.

Think about it as you jump on Mohawks Rock from time to time, even if it as simple as leaving a complete stranger a "happy birthday" message when you see its their birthday on the front page. Small things in your life, have the potential to have a monumental impact for somebody else. I think few people would not trade 10 seconds of a minute to positively impact the entire day of somebody else.

You never know when someday you might have a crazy question or problem in life, that you can't share with anyone around you, and suddenly you can turn to some social media outlet to get advice or even just someone to point out that they've been there, it sucks but it'll be alright.

Last weekend I saw something that sparked my interest. I was looking for a little something extra for my wife Julie. What I came across was a 100,000-volt, pocket/purse-sized taser gun. The effects of the taser gun were supposed to be short lived, with no long-term adverse affect on your assailant, allowing her adequate time to retreat to safety.

WAY TOO COOL!

Long story short, I bought the taser gun and brought it home.

I loaded two AAA batteries in the darn thing and pushed the button. No effect! I was disappointed. I learned, however, that if I pushed the button AND pressed the taser gun against a metal surface at the same time; I'd get the effect of a blue arc of electricity darting back and forth between the taser prongs. AWESOME!!! Unfortunately, I have yet to explain to Julie what that burn spot is on the face of her microwave.

Okay, so I was home alone with this new toy, thinking to myself that the effects couldn't be all that bad with only two triple-A batteries, right?

There I sat in my recliner, my cat Gracie looking on intently (trusting little soul) while I was reading the directions and thinking that I really needed to try this taser gun effects out on a flesh & blood moving target.

I must admit I thought about zapping Gracie (for a fraction of a second) and thought better of it. She is such a sweet cat. But, if I was going to give this taser to my wife to protect herself against a mugger, I did want some assurance that it would work as advertised. Am I wrong?

So, there I sat in a pair of shorts and a tank top with my reading glasses perched delicately on the bridge of my nose, directions in one hand, and taser gun in another.

The directions said that a one-second burst would shock and disorient your assailant; a two-second burst was supposed to effect muscle spasms and a major loss of bodily control; a three-second burst would purportedly make your assailant flop on the ground like a fish out of water. Any burst longer than three seconds would be wasting the taser gun batteries. All the while I'm looking at this little device measuring about 5' long, less than 3/4 inch in circumference; pretty cute really and (loaded with two itsy, bitsy triple-A batteries) thinking to myself, 'no possible way!'

The effects of what happened next is almost beyond description, but I'll do my best.

I'm sitting there alone, taser gun in hand, Gracie looking on with her head cocked to one side as to say, 'don't do it dipshit,' reasoning that a one second burst from such a tiny little ole taser gun couldn't hurt all that bad. I decided to give myself a one second burst just for heck of it, test the effects you know. I touched the prongs to my naked thigh, pushed the button, and . . . HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. .. . WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION . . . WHAT THE HELL!!!

Resulting taser gun effects ?? I'm pretty sure Jessie Ventura ran in through the side door, picked me up in the recliner, then body slammed us both on the carpet, over and over and over again. I vaguely recall waking up on my side in the fetal position, with tears in my eyes, body soaking wet, both nipples on fire, testicles nowhere to be found, with my left arm tucked under my body in the oddest position, and tingling in my legs?

The cat was making meowing sounds I had never heard before, clinging to a picture frame hanging above the fireplace, obviously in an attempt to avoid the after effects of getting slammed by my body flopping all over the living room.

Note: If you ever feel compelled to 'mug' yourself with a taser gun, one note of caution: there is no such thing as a one second burst when you taser gun yourself! You will not let go of that thing until it is dislodged from your hand by a violent thrashing about on the floor. A three second burst would be considered conservative?

A minute or so later (I can't be sure, as time was a relative thing at that point), I collected my wits (what little I had left), sat up and surveyed the landscape. My bent reading glasses were on the mantel of the fireplace. The recliner was upside down and about 8 feet or so from where it originally was. My triceps, right thigh and both nipples were still twitching. My face felt like it had been shot up with Novocaine, and my bottom lip weighed 88 lbs. I had no control over the drooling. Apparently I shit on myself, but was too numb to know for sure and my sense of smell was gone. I saw a faint smoke cloud above my head which I believe came from my hair. I'm still looking for my nuts and I'm offering a significant reward for their safe return!!

P. S. My wife loved the gift, and now regularly threatens me with the taser gun effects again!

If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid.

STOP LAUGHING! You can't fix stupid.

Just caught this song and some say it could be the summer hit anthem of the year, from the Future Stars a group consisting of Justin "J-Nez" Nesbitt and Sam "Future" Sarpong (former Host of MTV's "Yo Mama" and current Soap Network red-carpet correspondent). Combine them with "The Olly Girls", Holly and Molly from the hit E! Network show "Sunset Tans" to singing vocals saying how they love them for the mohawk and perhaps a summer smash hit will be born.

Not quite a punk song but I feel like their is definitely some influence of the old school Aerosmith and Run DMC rock, rap and bass influence of "Walk this Way". I cracked up in the beginning when the lady said "you mohawk wearing people need jesus". I thought, man, if Jesus was my homeboy, he'd rock a mohawk.

Not sure how this has slipped under our collective radars, but the Washington Capitals are doing a promotion called "Rock the Hawk" in their playoff games against the Flyers. There are special T-shirts by budweiser and a radio station giving away tickets to fans willing to shave a mohawk.
In the novel he plays a bodyguard who carries a business card stating “Next to God there is no better protector than I”. You just have to love the charm of good ol' Mr. T with his good guy character sticking to tackling tough issues and making kids excercise, eat and act right.

Its good to see a resurrgence of Mr. T things coming back around. Hopefully they re-release his cereal. The Night Elf Mohawk Commercials still crack me up.

This should be a collectors item worth having. If anyone gets one, let me know I'm considering grabbing one up myself.

And last but not least, don't forget you can ask Mr. T questions at his site, and hopefully you'll be lucky the winner of having him answer. Of course, I've already asked him if he knows about MohawksRock.com or his Fan Club on here. Don't forget to join his group if you have not already. And while you are in, fill in the poll, and watch his night elf video for more fun.
Still seeing if I can find a picture of them all together but apparently 7 players from the Calgary Flames including the two team captains, shaved mohawks as they entered the playoffs. I don't watch a lot of hockey, but think I may have a team to follow this year.
Even if you don't visit the site, and just want to read a good heartfelt story, I posted an entry up there about how my team and their work ended up saving the life of an 84 year old lady with sepsis.Secrets of members box revealed and more MohawksRock.com website insightstag:www.mohawksrock.com,2008-04-01:1501994:BlogPost:104532008-04-01T04:30:00.000ZGiant Mohawk Manhttps://www.mohawksrock.com/profile/giantmohawkman
I have moved the members box to the top of the main page, so that more of us could show up there.

Looks like the max I can get up there is 27 people. Just so everybody knows, the site puts people up there based upon activity on their profile. I believe when you log-in and when someone comments on your page, it cycles you up to the top again. Just didn't want anyone think I was playing favorites.

There have been a series of albums created since launch, and now those albums show up on the front page. I've tried maintaining them, but as membership is really starting to increase, I've fallen behind. So if one of your photos belongs in an album, go ahead and add it, or start a whole new album. The top album currently "kids with mohawks" is chosen by the popularity of the pictures inside.

Finally, Sonic Architects video is still up there for a good video tutorial. If anyone else makes one let me know and we'll get it featured up there somewhere.

I added a new profile question asking how people are finding us. It looks like Google is finally catching on that our community is out there helping people learn about others with the mohawk and most importantly the secrets to keeping it up. If you have blogs please write a short entry there linking back to us, as this will help more people find us. Also, add us on social bookmarking sites like delicious and/or magnolia.
Thank you all so much for rocking mohawksrock.com.
There is a new "phishing - like" scam around with a site called friendpics.info

Basically, you will get an IM message from MSN or maybe an email from a friend on hotmail saying to check out their site, which will have their screenname.friendpics.info

DO NOT ENTER your username and password for MSN on this site!!

You will then give them permission to use your MSN account to email and even instant message all of your friends about their site too. The longer this goes on, the more successful this unethical viral marketing campaign will work. Please tell your friends.

Is it legal maybe? They tell you everything at the bottom of the page, including that they are governed under Panama law.

Please pass this around. I just saw this about 10 minutes ago and there are not even Google entries on this site yet. Lets stop them with our network before they infect ours.Kids with Mohawks - Victims of Adults with Low Self Esteemtag:www.mohawksrock.com,2008-02-29:1501994:BlogPost:82662008-02-29T07:00:00.000ZGiant Mohawk Manhttps://www.mohawksrock.com/profile/giantmohawkman

He was warned several times that if he did not "conform" then he would not be "educated" with his classmates. When did the low self-esteem, individuals-are-bad mindset of a brainwashed robot "adult" come into a position to say who they would educate and who they would not. Fact is, kids who they will not be able to educate beyond rote memorization, won't just be the one with the mohawk, it will be all children victimized by the drudgery of their monotoned voices and thinking patterns.
Mohawk haircut gets Ohio kindergartner suspended from school
Bryan Ruda, 6, displays his haircut while playing in his Parma, Ohio, home.
PARMA, Ohio—A kindergarten student with a freshly spiked Mohawk has been suspended from school.

Michelle Barile, the mother of 6-year-old Bryan Ruda, said nothing in the Parma Community School handbook prohibits the haircut, characterized by closely shaved sides with a strip of prominent hair on top. The school said the hair was a distraction for other students.

"I understand they have a dress code. I understand he has a uniform. But this is total discrimination," she told The Plain Dealer. "They can't tell me how I can cut his hair."

An administrator at the suburban Cleveland charter school first warned Barile last fall that the haircut wasn't acceptable. The school later sent another warning to her reiterating the ban.

Mohawks violate the school's policy on being properly groomed, school Principal Linda Geyer said. Also, the school district's dress code allows school officials to forbid anything that interferes with the conduct of education.

Ruda's hair became a disruption last week when Ruda arrived freshly shorn, Geyer said. Administrators called Barile on Friday telling her to pick Ruda up from school.

"This was his third infraction," Geyer said yesterday. "We felt that we were being extremely patient."

Rather than request a hearing to appeal the suspension, Barile said she'll enroll him at another school. Changing the hairstyle is not an option, she said.

"It's something that he really likes," Barile said. "When people hear Mohawk, they think it's long, it's spiked, it's crazy looking, and it's really not."Sweet Dreams are Made of Seven Nation Armytag:www.mohawksrock.com,2008-02-20:1501994:BlogPost:76312008-02-20T23:19:15.000ZGiant Mohawk Manhttps://www.mohawksrock.com/profile/giantmohawkman

While up there, I was talking to his brother Todd about my mohawk and the different techniques that I have tried. During this conversation he mentioned that while working up on a ranch last summer they used a product that was basically hairspray for cattle. This intrigued me, and he called up the next day with the name,
Sullivans "Prime Time".

So a little trip to the local Quality Supply and a little hunting finally led me to the magical green can. There it was. Strong enough for a cow but soon to be good enough for a man.

However, two things disturbed me about my new soon to be purchased magical can.

1.) Possibly linked to causing cancer in California.

I thought, hmm, well this is Montana. I'm safe to use it here then.

2.) Can only be removed by antidote, Sullivans Hocus Pocus.

Antidote? What! Really? Nah. Now I've tried just about everything from toothpaste to Elmers Glue, and have been just fine washing it out. Besides, if its that bad, I'll just come back and grab the antidote.

So its my last night in Montana before flying to of all places, 'California', and its time to let the kids see their uncle Cheyenne's giant mohawk, and time for me to test the Prime Time before heading to California, where of course it could cause me to have cancer.

Where to start and spray? Hmm, I think I'll just stand kind of upside down in the backyard where everyone can see and grab a strand of hair in the back, pulling straight up with the blow
dryer connected to a big orange extension cord. (If this ain't mohawk meets country?)

The moment. Spray. Swish the can explodes in what looks like elmers glue coming out of a pinhole punctured oxygen tank, so quickly it makes like a liquid spider web instantly coating the strand I'm holding, my hand and more of my hair. Holy crap! This stuff is going to be awesome! But wait, its instantaneously causing my hair to bundle and matte upon itself.

Thats ok, I'll just wash this out, lay down and more properly do this. But, alas as my brother points out moments after the matting spider web of liquid elmers glue is ratting my hair, "Uh yeah dude. Quality Supply is totally closed, stores don't stay open that late in Montana." Drat! The antidote. Drat! My plane will leave before the store even opens. No Hocus Pocus the Joke is on me.

A mad dash into the bathroom to soap, shampoo, water and wash the matting nest on my head. Too late, might you ask? maybe. Some was washed, some remained for 4 days, until eventually the california water
and sun finally worked the last bits of Prime Time out.

Fortunately I still had plenty of a can of Prime Time left to try the experiment again upon my return home. However, what did I find after opening my bag in San Diego? Yup. A note from the good old U.S. government TSA. Sitting right next to my untouched cans of Got2BeGlued, the note said, they had to confiscate an unapproved volatile substance from my bag, and that it would not be returned to me.

Moral of the story being. Don't trust the TSA not to steal your most prized posessions, or perhaps that maybe, when cancer, cattle and antidotes are all involved in the making of a mohawk, maybe its time to just stick to good ol' tried and true Got2BeGlued.
