Yes, the ability to form a growing individuality that yet stands unwaivering towards those trying to mold the entirety of those that surround them with their ideal definition of 'proper' is something I think all should cultivate. Although I find retaining what you've constructed as you're identity vital, there are a number of attributes such as loyalty, strength, and honor I believe an individual should use as their foundation for personal outlook and actions. Progression from that starting point is the capability of building further upon that foundation with options of their choice as they desire and continue through life with all the numerous experiences it presents which cause a personal evolution. Your thoughts, preferences, etc. grow over time borrowing from such as previously existing concepts or personal experience which is what shapes what you become and will be.
Sorry for the lapse in response time. Another thing I should add to that list is I have horrible habit of applying my 'I should do this, but I'm going to do this instead and forget about it' attitude at times to comments. Thanks though, always good to get that kind of feedback and not the 'what the fuck is wrong with you.' Though either way it makes me smile
