i rub my hands in opposite circles on all of my hair until it gets teased and pretty much stays up by itself then i take Got2b and i spray it in my hands, rub it in for a sec and then flip my head down and pull it up.. it usually stays after 2 swipes than i wait a few mins to dry and then blast it a few times to make it hold.. this way makes it reealy fluffy and flexible but it stays up for days if you use enough layers
heres wut i do i rub my hair into a frizz like an afro would feel with the palm of my hand, just push your palm into your head and go in circles till your head gets ALL frizzy then shape your hawk while its dry then when you got it perfect spray it with got to be freeze spray and if you want it around for a few days you can coat that with knox geletin just mix 1 envelope with 1/4 cup of hot water and put it on with your hands :-) hope i explained well enough. thats how i fan mine and it is a hard thing to master.
Everybody seems to have this covered, so all I'm going to add is that I use freezing spray. It works best for me, since I have super curly hair. I do use conditioner, because I have to straighten my hair before I put it up. I think most of it is trial and error, you just have to find what works best for you.
Was asked how I do mine by another memeber so heres what I do.

Okay here goes can take me maybe 20 mins if Im in a rush n usually end up with not the best fan usually around 30-40 mins tho but heres my method n by the way I have curly wavy hair normally.
I start off with g2b spiking glue work that through me hair then with a hairdryer n comb start to work it up so its standing upright but dont dry it right out then with a fine tooth comb start to comb through n separate the clumps as u dry hair right out (you kinda have to make it look worse to look better at the end expect hair to be a bit all over the place but basically pointing in the right direction) then start applying layers of a good freeze hold hairspray n drying with a hair dryer ( I usually work the ends together using my spare hand) If u fuck it up a bit comb it out carefully n reapply hairspray. While tryin to get everything right dont fully dry out n fix hairspray as can be a bitch to comb out n may have to resorst to washing it out n starting a again. Once u got it looking good can dry it fully hard n apply more layers of hair sparay to fix it all in place.
Kinda take s practice but works for me.
If I sleep right can usually go 3-4 days without having to redo it.
Oh yeah cause i got curly wavy hair i usually run straighteners through it every 2-3 weeks.
Hope this helps but best advice take ur time n find what works for you may take a while at first but u'll speed up over time.
ok, i use knox, which is kinda hard to use to get a "perfect fan", so my fan is kinda messy, but i like it and its really sturdy.

i had my friend use got2glued freeze spray on my hair once. we straightened it and then used a comb to pull up each section of my hawk and sprayed a good bit of hair spray on it and then lightly blow dried it, it turned out perfect, but it was really delicate. it didn't stay up for very long. it might have been weak because my hawk is about ten inches tall.
I think it depends on your hair type as well. like if you have thick hair or a wide hawk it'll have better support.
some people back comb their hair and then spray it up.

I SILL CAN"T DO THIS!!! God!!

I've had a hawk for about 3 years (on and off) and all I've really ever done was liberty spikes because there easier for me. My hair is currently 4.5 inches. Ive been trying all these methods and went through a whole bottle of Got2b. When I pull up a section, spray, blow dry then move on to the next section, I can't get the two sections to blend together. They look like really wide spikes. I guess I use to much spray or dry it to much but, when I use less and blow dry it less it flops over. Then the "crown" area is difficult and it gaps where the back meets the top and I cant freakin get it to all just run together, and the back is kind of curly and it never wants to stand straight. It's really starting to piss me off.

Maybe I should try to straighten. I just havent been able to get out and get one lately.

How often should you straighten so it dosent fry your hair?

Just to note, the middle image is photoshopped.

I'm pretty convinced it's just magic.

i've had my mohawk for like 3 years now and this is now how i do it
i wash my hair with any conditioner that says "volume" and i use a shit-ton of it, mostly because i only wash my hair once a week, and leave it in for like 5-10 mins while your in the shower. it makes your hair thick enough that it will have enough body to hold itself up when you spray it
then i blowdry it until its completely dry
then i use a comb to comb up in place a section of hair and spray it all over one side, particularly adding more spray to the section of the hair closer to my head, and blowdry it until it stands, then i do the same to the other side
i repeat this until its all up, combing together hair from sections to fill the gaps between them

you should find some goodass hairspray, though, cuz a shitty one usually just doesn't do the trick
i recommend something like aquanet, got2b glued, tresemme, anything like that
hairprays that tend to seem like they're geared towards girls usually hold the best

it takes practice, don't get frustrated. chances are you won't get it right away
cheers

i dont know if you still have a mohawk from back in '09 but haha getting the perfect fan is really easy!
