If I straighten my hair while it's spiked, will it stay like that? For how long?

I've been reading some stuff on how to get a fan-hawk (mine is just spiked..not liberty or anything, but not fanned) and I want mine fanned...how can I do this easily? I read to spike your hair and then straighten it...Will that work? How long will it stay up?

I used to straighten it while spiked. It makes your hair look kinda fuzzy or something, which might be what your looking for, but it doesnt look spikey at all any more just like soft.
