Also depends on if you have thin hair or not. The wider the base, the higher the 'hawk can go without appearing sparse at the top. I'd start with 3 fingers wide, since you can always trim more if you want, it's much harder to grow in around 2 fingers if it turns out too narrow.

yo mate, just get ur razor shave both size to bald. 3 fingers works for big fanned mohawk if u wanna grow a 8+inch mohawk. You can go for it. If its 4-6inch two finger s the best. Plz do attach some photos about before and after. that will be pretty cool, man. Do it asap and u will enjoy the growth journey which has lots fun.
