Mohawks Rock

So I applied to work at a local athletic club, went through the interview process and they offered to hire me on the spot. I told them I needed time to think cause there was another job I was considering. Well I went with the athletic club. 10 minutes before I was to fill out the paper work, I recieve a phone call. It was the head therapist of the club and she explained to me that she wanted to hire me, the manager of the branch I were to work at wanted to hire me, but some guy above both of them got wind of a massage therapist with a mohawk and said I would have to cut it. If not I could not work for them.

So some guy who wasn't invovled with the interviewing process says I can not work based on my haircut that he didn't even see. I turned them down cause I said I wouldn't comprimise my integrity or who I am. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

My school is always on my case about my hawk. There real conservative (ignorant) here. They used to give me detentions, saturday works, even suspensions. Now, they gave up, I win! You'll find work, I'm sure, just be persistant, people should understand mohawks aren't just a haircut, they're more of a hobby.
you know they cant do that, there are laws against descrimination (sp).. they cant turn you down because of what you look like!..i say you sue them.. =p
unfortunately I don't think its descimination if they state in their policies that hairstyles should be "professional". The bullshit thing is that is such a broad term that many hairstyles won't fit under that category.
yeah in AZ where i live its a right to work state, or as i like to call it a "we're gonna fuck u state". they can fire or not hire you for no reason at all amongst other bullshit. i wanna know who the hell voted for that shit, they were like "right to work? i wanna to have the right to work, CHECK!".
Actually I did cut it shorter and I even had it combed back so it was very toned down. The guy who said no wasn't even ther for my interview.
Sadly, they can. If it isnt race, gender, sexuality, religious beliefs, marital status, and only your hair, the law says it's cool to discriminate.

Even sexuality can be discriminated against if you are applying for a position in a remotely christian group, such as St. Vincent de pauls or other charity groups funded by a religious body.

As the Clash said, know your rights.
Sadly, the right to have a mohawk and be treated as equal isnt one of them :(
Yeah I ran into a gender problem too, Being a male massag therapist my job options are limited as well. Cause its such a competitive market that a female therapist will get chosen over me. Especially at a spa. Cause a lot of people don't want a male therapist.
yeah, i had to cut mine to keep my job even though i wore it down and combed back. under normal cirumstances i wouldn't do it, and i was going to quit. but after a weekend of drinking and blowing off steam i came to the conclusion that with the way the economy is i can't afford to be out of work. hair grows back, we cant be so sure about the economy.
Hey man props on keeping tru to yourself. My employer fortunately let me keep it, but after a week they told me I couldnt have it up, and unfortunately I cant dye it any bright colors (I was gonna do bright orange). Good for you man, hope you find a job soon
Thanks man I actually do have a steady job right now and they don't care what I do with it. I'm really just looking for a second job in my field.
maybe your looking for the wrong kind of work , I found types of work where it was an advantage to have a mohawk , piercings and tats/scars , and if truth be known it pays a damn site better too .
I just question how come a mohawk is not considered "professional" just because its different? Or showing tattooes, is it because old people are scared of people like me and that I might secretly steal their wallet during a massage or shank them when they are face down?
