Mohawks Rock

So I applied to work at a local athletic club, went through the interview process and they offered to hire me on the spot. I told them I needed time to think cause there was another job I was considering. Well I went with the athletic club. 10 minutes before I was to fill out the paper work, I recieve a phone call. It was the head therapist of the club and she explained to me that she wanted to hire me, the manager of the branch I were to work at wanted to hire me, but some guy above both of them got wind of a massage therapist with a mohawk and said I would have to cut it. If not I could not work for them.

So some guy who wasn't invovled with the interviewing process says I can not work based on my haircut that he didn't even see. I turned them down cause I said I wouldn't comprimise my integrity or who I am. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Lol well that to me is a compliment. Some people like to see a burly massage therapist cause they know they would get a great massage.
I worked at Cracker Barrel, the old country store, and ended up getting fired because I grew my hair too long and refused to cut it (didn't have a hawk at the time).

I don't see why mohawks have a bad social image. It's technically one of the most traditional American hair cuts.
I agree, Thats why I'm taking a stand and not cutting it. I want to show that a haircut is just a haircut. What makes me mad is that people who try to get that just-got-out-of-bed hairstyle is considered more professional than a mohawk. At least when we put it up its clean and tidy.
Well to update anyone that was repling to this discussion. I am now massaging at bodyMechanics LLC. I have had to clients this week so far. My coworkers think its wild and have no problem with my hawk being up.
YAY! Congrats. Most people (who aren't uptight managers) seem to receive mohawks pretty well, mostly out of genuine curiosity.
I've got two bits to add in, even if it is a month later.
A. Some companies have policies regarding how you wear your hair...especially if you work with specific types of clients or in certain areas. They might be worried about losing specific clients that spend a TON of money or something.
Ex: When I worked for a cell phone company, we were told to carry gum or mints at all times, make sure our nails were nicely taken care of, and that our make up was not over the top (because when you're selling phones, they become an extension of you, and if your hands are disgusting, people could be turned off of the sale.

B. Your mohawk does not do your job. You do your job. Your job performance should not be affected by hair. I was hired in all stores with a mohawk. One got a new District Manager who had never met me, who said if I didn't get rid of my mohawk or if i colored it, he'd fire me. I was one of his best sales people. =\
YEah I'm going to wait till I build a study clientele before I color mine.
The reactions are rediculous. But thats a good plan. That way, if you transferred and had all your clients come with you, you'd be in business regardless.
I meant steady clientele by the way. Hmm maybe thats why they didn't hire me because I'm a dumby.
No, you aren't dumb.

I assumed, but didn't want it just to be left out there...you know what there is to be said when you start making assumptions! haha

*edit*
I thought you were working there?
you know in the new quebec its fashon now to have a short mohawk so its alright to work with it but if you pass 3 inches youre gonna have problems and only welfare hires you anyways in my world work is too rebel so im trying to quit
When i had an interview i had it down.. got hired.. put it up on my second day and luckily they all liked it and the manager said it reminded him of his youth.

But i'm pretty sure they cant not hire you for it.. thing is to explain that you can easily have conversation with customers because of it and it entertains them :]

keep tryin
