I don't think she's thinking any deeper than a neurotic (over-reaction/injury) feeling, that she'll then cover up with false 'reasons' to satisfy her ego & others she mentions it to.

Though she may feel satisfied she fits within her expected 'norm' after and rejecting anything outside it.  I doubt (with this) she'd ever think to the positive ideals of courage or wistfulness.  Some folk do, but those are already supportive/amazed and more open-minded.

On the outside, that lady is adhering to the conformist protocol of disapproval to something she knows nothing about and is different, so therefore not acceptable. But inside, she is more than likely wishing desperately that she had the courage to don a Hawk such as those. Sad really. :-(
