Mohawks Rock

What is the extent that parents should be allowed to control their children?
I believe a parents role in the family is to teach them how to behave in society and values etc, and look after them, but some go too far and others get plainly ridiculous.
so ideas?

Thats why I ran away and chose that gutter over the gold
Hot button topic!

I think it depends on the children themselves. Some do need continual guidance. the younger generations are more spoiled and expect the answers to magically appear or for us to do everything for them...at least out here.

However, if you're 20, like me, and your parents tell you that you have to go to bed at 8 pm...then something is fucked up.
What about with alternative lifestyle and hairstyles etc when parents say " i don't want MY child looking like that"?
its ill founded. thats to the point of them living vicariously through their child. like their kid being himself is a blight upon their existence. unfortunately though, most people (at least around here) do think that childrens appearance are a reflection of the parent.
There is a difference between them just saying that and enforcing what they said.
I also have to point out that alternative lifestyles and the like aren't exactly unheard of, especially considering all of the scene kids mimicing them. It's more and more prevalent in my area. In the end, will the parents love you less? Probably not, they most likely remember growing up and going through a similar phase and accept it as a part of life and such.

Likewise, you also have parents that smoke their kids up, take them clubbing, get them fake IDs, etc. I would also say thats the other extreme.

I think it's all case by case, and all parents really have to pick their battles.
My mom hates my mohawk, but would prefer I'm happy with what I'm doing with myself, instead of being unhappy and getting into drugs and shit.
idk my parents would threaten to throw me out every month and constantly tell me i was worthless. i guess the mohawk was the icing on the cake to them. just another reason to claim i was a bad person. This is how i developed depression, at one particular instance they near drove me to suicide, i just didn't want to live anymore and i wanted to do it just to make them suffer. they never knew how to pick their battles. I'm almost 21 and my mother suffers from the delusion that I have a curfew whenever i come home from college hahahaha

Up until my sophomore year of high school my clothes (whether i bought them myself or not) my haircut and even my choice of music were under their constant control. Before i found punk rock, my friend bought me AC/DC's Highway to Hell as a birthday present. My parents confiscated it and threw it away while i was at work. If i bought clothes they didnt like they made me return them or they threw them out. My father wouldn't let me buy a black hooded sweatshirt for the longest time because he thought i was trying to be "gothic" i had to settle for a dark blue or some other dark color (i hate bright colored clothing it just doesnt work for me). Once, they made me destroy my Nintendo 64 with a sledge hammer (i'm not sure why anymore, probably failed to perform some house cleaning to their standards). I don't want to sound like some stereotypical teen angster but my situation called for defiance and lots of it. If i didn't i probably wouldn't be on here posting this.

I like to think they love me and they value my happiness, they've gotten better since i've left home. To be honest though, before i went off to college i didn't think that i would make it to my next birthday if i had to stay under their roof. It's true what you say about being unhappy and turning to drugs and shit. I started drinking for the escape of it. Not really to rebel or anything, it just helped me forget about them for a while.

Now that i'm about 21 i feel as though they are in for a crude awakening. they don't know i smoke or drink. I don't abuse anything and i rarely get trashed like i used to, but just the fact that i do it is enough for them to throw a bitch fit and disown me. I really don't care though.
I agree with Khaos, I think that it depends on the person.

I know that some parents are much too controlling, though.
Yeah. Definitely.

I am one of the kids who you can tell over and over doing this or that is bad. But I will have to find out on my own why. I don't care that someone says so. haha, but that has made me who I am today.
Children disrespectful to the Great Leader will be Liquidated by the State.

No seriously though, This is how it works, Parents try to be tough on the kids and put them on their "right path". Yes some of them will be too tough, but as a whole, it will always be an eternal struggle of the new generation against the old. It is inevitable.
Unless we involve ninjas
And even with that in account, you cannot ignore the possibility of Ghost Pirates.
And then you have to go into zombie nazis and all manner of wierd and wonderful creatures!
