Flying - experiences
Hi,
I've only had my mohawk for 2 weeks now and only joined this website about an hour ago (although I've been reading for the last day).
Anyway... In about a week and a half I'm flying to Sydney (from Cairns) to meet up with my sister and her boyfriend, and then driving down to Canberra to catch up with the rest of my family.
I'm wondering what other peoples experience is with flying with their mohawk.
I want to fly with it up, but will I get hassled a lot? Are the plane seats too cramped and will I have to turn my head to even lean back in the seat?.
Since this is my first post on this forum I should give a little information about myself.
I'm 28. I live in Cairns, Australia (In North Queensland). I'm Filipino, but I've lived in Australia since the beginning of 1986.
I work as games manager at a large chain of retail stores that sells DVDs, CDs, Games, computers, cameras and hifi equipment in Australia. We have no work uniform (except for nothing offensive), so my mohawk has never been an issue.
Each spike is just over 25cms long (10 inches).
I'm 6' tall, so with my hair that makes me about 6' 10".
I asked my friend to shave my head and help me make my mohawk 2 weeks ago. Why?
Because here in Cairns it's too hot and humid to have long hair like mine. That and I wanted to show my workmates what working in this store is all about. We're almost encouraged to have tattooes and piercings.
In fact my other games guy and I are often remembered by customers as "Tattoo" and "Mohawk".
The other thing is that I've always wanted to do it. I've been losing my hair on top since I was 18 (If you look at my front spike you'll see it's much more sparse than the others), so I wanted to do it before I go bald. Plus I'm in the perfect work environment.
Customers love it, I'm easy to find and if anyone doesn't like it, they are usually too scared to tell me. Plus the posers with their tiny 1 inch fauxhawk that think their hair is awesome see mine and shut up.

That night my friends did my mohawk with no hairdryer. I originally wanted a fan, but with the lack of hair on top, I changed to spikes.
Other photos are more recent and show that I'm getting better at putting it up (although it's definitely not perfect).
Anyway back on topic.

To start off, after looking at your pictures a fan probably wouldn't hurt you too much. You'd probably just have to get your hair used to being brushed back (assuming that's how you've had it)
As for flying, I myself would leave it down just for practicality. If you're gonna relax on your flight and don't wanna have to turn your head or worry about it getting crushed against a seat then leave I'd leave it down. In my times of dealing with flying I couldn't possibly imagine worrying about my hawk at it's current height while running like a chicken with my head cut off through an airport.
By the way, welcome to Mohawks Rock! It's really a great place to be, just look out for t3h chi3f. He's not a very good guy to talk to so it'd be best to just ignore him. And I've only my true mohawk for a couple weeks myself, I've done it a couple times before but this is the only time I've been able to fully utilize it. Anyway, welcome! :D

I might try a fan when I'm not pressed for time. I'm going to Canberra to see my family for my annual leave, so I'll have time to play around with my hair then. For now spikes are easy to put up.
The flight is 3 hours long, for those wondering (because I neglected to mention it in the opening post).
:) I've been reading threads for the last day or so before I signed up. I saw t3h chi3f's posts.
I moderated a decent size forum for about 4 years. I've encountered my fair share of forum trolls.

Ah, well then we can dispense with the pleasantries, lol. It's no problem.
You'll probably get a lot better advice from people later on in the day though, when most people are on.

I expected there to be very few replies now. For me it's 9:40pm right now. I'm guessing the majority of this forum is on the other side of the world and getting up.
I'm wondering if there are any other Aussies on this forum.
I know my family will be happy to see me. My mum heard that I have a mohawk now and thoroughly approved, although she's yet to see it. Plus workmates at my old store were very surprised to hear about what I did with my hair.

I know of a couple Aussies on here, Segadoway being one and I forget the other. I'm sure there's quite a few more though.
Lol, that's great though. I'm sure they'll get a good kick out of it. Most people usually seem to.
And I just happened to be on. Usually by that time I'm fast asleep.

It might be a good idea to leave it down for a flight, especially because of how cramped airplanes are already. Also, the people at customs might hassle you because of it.

That is my curiousity as well. But I had to keep mine down for flights because I have the hardest time getting comforable on flights and most of the time I don't want to talk to anybody. With my hawk up I would have to deal with getting my hair brushed against getting it smashed and people either making dumb comments or asking me to many questions when I just want to sleep.

Well... I just found out that at the end of February I'm being flown to Melbourne because I won a competition at work!
My prize will require me to have my hair down (I have to wear a helmet), so maybe I'll fly down with my hair up for this. :D
Surprise all the guys from my Head Office when I get off the plane :D But I'll make sure to have my hair down for the event.
I need to find out more details when I'm actually flying down and returning too. Plus accomodation. But YAY! for free trips :D

Now that I've flown with it down, I've decided that I will continue to have my mohawk down when I fly.
Why?
Because when I was sitting down, I realised that my spikes would be close to, if not already hitting, the overhead compartment.
And when I stand up on the plane my head is close enough to the roof without having to worry about my hair.
I fly again on Thursday :D
When I get to my hotel room, I'll put my mohawk up and hit the city. Meeting friends there.
